Overpopulation

 Overpopulation

"The world’s population is expected to increase by 2 billion persons in the next 30 years, from 7.7 billion currently to 9.7 billion in 2050 and could peak at nearly 11 billion around 2100."

“Overpopulation in various countries had become a serious threat to the health of people and a grave obstacle to any attempt to organise peace on this planet.” -Albert Einstein

Overpopulation can be described s the condition where the number of the existing human population exceeds the carrying capacity of the earth.

Certain thresholds limits of the population density is exceeded and the environmental resources fail to meet the need and requirements of individual organisms.

Overpopulation may lead to environmental deterioration, and impaired quality of life, or a population crash.

Causes of overpopulation include:

  • A decline in the death rate
  • Medical advancements due to technology
  • Lack of family planning facilities in developing countries
  • Advancements in fertility treatments
  • Poor contraceptive uses

The most severe consequence of overpopulation is the depletion of natural resources as well as the degradation of the enviornment.

Due to an increase in the use of resources such as coal, oil, and natural gas as well as the rise in carbon dioxide emissions, global warming, climate change and rise in sea levels can all take place at a faster rate.

Other consequences of overpopulation include:

  • Water shortage due to higher demand
  • Possible malnutrition, starvation and famine
  • Rise in unemployment
  • Ecological degradation
  • increased conflicts due to scarcity
  • Higher risks of pandemics and epidemics
Possible solutions to an increasing population include: access to higher levels of education, better access to family planning facilities, and spreading information via social marketing to raise awareness.

Overpopulation is a situation that will impact individuals, communities, countries and continents.
