Discrimination

 Discrimination

“Prejudice is a burden that confuses the past, threatens the future, and renders the present inaccessible.” -Maya Angelou

Discrimination is defined as unequal treatment of various groups based on various factors.

Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 states that it is “illegal to discriminate against someone on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, or sex."

Discrimination can be faced in any profession, in the workplace, and even in daily locations such as shops, restaurants, transport like buses or trains, and in sports.

Discrimantion may take place in various forms such as direct, indirect and intersectional discrimination.

The different types of discrimination include:

  • Age, diability, and national, ethinic or immigrant origin discrimination
  • Discrimination due to race, and colour
  • Discrimination based on gender and sexual orientation
  • Example: HIV related stigma and discrimination

Discrimination can negatively impact ones health as an individual faced with discrimination may have higher stress levels, in comparison to those who have not faced it.

It impacts an individuals well being, their sense of agency and opportunities presented to them.

Furthermore chronic stress can lead to both physical and mental health issues such as obesity, anxiety, substance abuse and depression.

Constant exposure to discrimination may lead to the development of shame, low self-esteem, fear and poor health in a individual.

Anticipation of discrimination can lead to individuals missing opportunities in situations where they may be discrminatied against such as a job opportunity.

Seeking support systems, as well as seeking professional help can help an individual deal with the impacts of discrimination.

Connecting with like minded individuals who may have had similar experiences via online or physical methods as well as not dwelling or directing too much attention towards discriminatory experiences can also prove to be helpful.

Speaking up, whether to a senior such as a guardian or parent or a law enforcement officer is a key method of dealing with those who may be faced with discrimination.

The issue of discrimination is one that needs to be spoken about immediately. Image:
