Basic employment rights

 Basic employment rights

"Employees have basic rights to freedom from harassment and discrimination, safe work environments, freedom from retaliation for filing discrimination-related claims, and fair compensation for work."

"We need to support new organizing strategies for employees who too often have never had the benefit of collective bargaining, and we have to resist the assault on workers' rights." -Hillary Clinton

Employee rights are defined as the rights that an employee has to be treated in a fair morally acceptable or legal way.

These are rights that an individual are morally or legally entitled to have or do.

In today's economy labour rights are steadily gaining importance due to an unprecedented rise in global trade, global investment, global (multinational) corporations, and global distributions of production.

Due to workers and labour standards and being affected by globalisation and international competition, individuals in every sector are impacted, hence workers rights are becoming increasingly significant.

The International Labour Organisation (ILO) has adopted numerous conventions that establish standards for a range of workplace issues that include, but are not limited to:

  • Disability insurance
  • Child labour
  • Forced labour
  • Social security
  • Migrant labour protections
  • Education and training
  • Minimum wage
  • Pensions
  • Discrimination
  • Rights of rural workers
  • Unemployment benefits
  • Collective bargaining, etc
Furthermore, all ILO member nations have an obligation to promote and respect the most fundamental labour workers rights that include:
  • Effective abolition of child labour
  • Freedom of association and the right to collective bargaining
  • Elimination of all forms of forced labour or compulsory labor
  • Elimination of discrimination in respect of employment and occupation

Workers are also entitled to annual leave's, sick leave's, and public holidays (varying from country to country).

A worker should be aware of their employee rights, as employment rights affect workers, economies, and countries.
