Homelessness

 Homelessness

"It's estimated that no less than 150 million people, or about 2% of the world's population, are homeless. However, about 1.6 billion, more than 20% of the world's population, may lack adequate housing."

"We have come dangerously close to accepting the homeless situation as a problem that we just can't solve." -Linda Lingle

Homelessness is defined as "the situation of an individual, family, or community without stable, safe, permanent, appropriate housing, or the immediate prospect means and ability of acquiring it.”

The major causes of homelessness include the lack of affordable housing, poverty, unemployment, and the lack of needs services.

Homelessness impacts both the personal mental well-being of an individual and physical well-being.

Mental impacts include low self-esteem, an increase in substance misuse increased danger of abuse and violence, development of behavioral problems, and increasing chance of entering the criminal justice system.

Physical well-being impacts include higher exposure to tuberculosis and skin diseases, mental illness, nutritional deficiencies, and mortality.

Homelessness can also impact communities as a whole.

There is a "53% chance that someone could be involved in street drinking, a 32% chance that someone could beg, and a 10% chance that someone could be involved in prostitution."

Homelessness is a situation that impacts countries, communities, and individuals throughout the globe and requires the attention it deserves.

This creates tremendous opportunities and tremendous challenges." -Pat Conroy " There were 703 million people aged 65 years or over in the world in 2019 and the number of older people is projected to double to 1.5 billion in 2050." Ageing population refers to the change in the age composition of a population such that there is an increase in the proportion of older people.  The average or median age or of the citizens of a country increases due to a longer life expectancy of its citizens of a lower birth rate per year. The increase in the aged population does provide some economic advantages.  Due to older people having higher accumulated savings than younger individuals, a large ageing population can result ...
